Carved from rich and lustrous Brazilian soapstone, this bear stands on hind legs, head turned up to the sky. This is a rare item, having been carved by the late Les Carpenter, recipient of the Order of the Northwest Territories.

Les Carpenter was an Inuvialuk leader, radio broadcaster, and Indigenous rights advocate. Originally from Sachs Harbour, NWT, he was the founding chair of the Inuvialuit Regional Corporation, vice chair of the Inuit Circumpolar Council, and CEO of the Native Communications Society. He passed away in 2018 at the age of 61 and was posthumously awarded the Order of the NWT.
