Laurie 'Angaatju' McCarron, the maker behind Prosperity Parkas, is Inuvialuk of mixed heritage. Born and raised in Grande Prairie, Alberta, she grew up with some connection to northern family and culture through her mom, Georgina 'Kusiaq' Stefansson, and her auntie, Rosie 'Niurlan Usi' Albert. After graduating from university, Laurie accepted her aunt’s invitation to go to Inuvik, where for four years she had the opportunity to spend time with relatives and travel all over the territories.
Laurie began sewing parkas after the passing of her mother and of her aunt:
‘’I felt a huge loss and was disconnected. Who would answer all the questions I had about Inuvialuit culture? I had huge regrets for not learning more when I had the best teachers. This led me to make parkies.....and in the most unexpected way, I gained a new network of people to learn from."
